Islamabad, March 23, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has revealed that a comprehensive relief package aimed at reducing electricity costs for consumers will be announced soon.
Chairing a meeting on the Power Division in Islamabad, the prime minister emphasized that ongoing power sector reforms would enable the government to bring down electricity prices. He directed officials to counter misconceptions regarding the government’s solarisation policy with factual communication, reaffirming that promoting renewable energy remains a top priority.
In a bid to improve efficiency in the power sector, PM Shehbaz also called for an expedited privatisation process for power distribution companies while urging swift resolution of legal and administrative hurdles affecting the liquidation of generation companies. He further stressed the need for enhanced coordination between the Power Division, Water Resources Division, and Petroleum Division to formulate a unified energy strategy.
Earlier reports suggested that the government was expected to announce an Rs8 per unit reduction in electricity tariffs following approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Ministry of Finance and the Power Division had also explored additional measures to further cut rates by Rs2 per unit, with a final decision taken before the official announcement.
The reduction is set to take effect from April 1, 2025, and will be reflected in consumer bills starting in May. Of the Rs8 per unit decrease, Rs4.73 per unit has been designated as a permanent adjustment, bringing much-needed relief to electricity consumers.
