Karachi, May 22, 2025: A low-pressure weather system has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea and is likely to intensify over the coming weekend, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Thursday.

The system is currently situated approximately 1,075 kilometers southeast of Karachi, near latitude 16.4°N and longitude 71.9°E, and is moving northward. Meteorologists predict that the system could develop into a depression within the next 36 hours, and under favorable atmospheric and oceanic conditions, it may further strengthen into a deep depression or cyclonic storm by May 24 or 25.

PMD officials have clarified that there is currently no direct threat to Pakistan’s coastal areas, but the system is being closely monitored by the Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi.

Experts attribute the system’s potential intensification to high sea surface temperatures, which are acting as a catalyst for its development. While the possibility of cyclone formation exists, its trajectory remains uncertain and dependent on evolving meteorological conditions.

The weather system is already impacting local weather patterns. Disruption of Karachi’s sea breeze is expected, which could lead to extremely hot and humid conditions in the metropolis over the next few days.

Although some parts of India have issued cyclone alerts, Pakistani authorities emphasize that there is no cyclone warning in effect for Pakistan at this time.

The Cyclone Warning Centre Karachi continues to monitor the system around the clock and has assured that all relevant agencies and stakeholders will be kept informed of any significant developments.

Residents in coastal areas are advised to stay updated with official weather advisories and avoid speculation or panic, as the situation remains under control for now.
