Islamabad, July 10, 2025: At least 11 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents as torrential monsoon rains triggered flash floods across northern Pakistan, compounding an already critical situation.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued high alerts for several regions, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, as well as parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Balochistan. The downpours are expected to continue through July 11, with warnings of flash floods in local streams and nullahs.
According to earlier figures, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recorded at least 79 rain-related fatalities across the country since the onset of the monsoon on June 26. The latest 11 casualties include two children and a woman in Kasur who died of electrocution, while others succumbed to lightning strikes and flash floods.
In Islamabad, search operations are ongoing for Mohsin, a man who fell into the Sharifabad drain. Rescue teams are combing the areas near Sharifabad, Gulberg, and the Swat River. Eyewitnesses reported that Mohsin attempted to hold onto the edge of the drain but was swept away by the strong current.
Another incident involved a motorcyclist who was carried away by rising waters in the Korang drain. A video of the episode went viral on social media, highlighting the dangers of traveling during extreme weather conditions.
Urban flooding has brought life to a standstill in several cities. Low-lying areas of Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala remain submerged, disrupting traffic and blocking key roads.
The situation remains particularly precarious in mountainous regions. Landslide warnings have been issued for parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, and Gilgit-Baltistan, where persistent rainfall has loosened soil on steep slopes.
In Balochistan, thunderstorms continue to affect districts like Zhob and Sibi. Rivers in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan have swollen, raising fears of further flooding.
While Karachi has largely avoided major impacts, light to moderate rain in areas like Gulshan-e-Hadeed and along the National Highway has caused minor disruptions.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas, and to remain indoors where possible. Rescue teams have been deployed to affected zones, and government agencies are on high alert as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
