Imran Khan nominates Raja Nasir Abbas as Opposition Leader in Senate

Islamabad, August 26, 2025: In a significant political move, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, chief of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Pakistan, as the new Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, party sources confirmed Tuesday.

The nomination comes amid an escalating power struggle in the upper house, as opposition parties maneuver to counter the ruling coalition. By backing Allama Nasir Abbas, PTI aims to consolidate its parliamentary influence and strengthen ties with religious-political allies.

Party officials said Khan’s decision reflects a strategy to forge a “unified and assertive opposition voice” in the Senate, with Abbas expected to play a key role in challenging government legislation and raising issues such as inflation, governance, and the rule of law.

The development comes against a backdrop of heightened political tensions, with PTI grappling with ongoing legal battles, restrictions on its political activities, and an increasingly polarized Parliament.

Political analysts view the nomination as both symbolic and tactical — a move designed to broaden PTI’s alliances, extend its outreach to religious constituencies, and reinforce its presence in the Senate at a critical time.

The formal appointment of the Opposition Leader will be completed in line with Senate procedures in the coming days.
