Dubai, September 7, 2025: Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has urged the national side to avoid repeating selection and tactical errors from the recent tri-series as they prepare for the Asia Cup 2025, which begins this week in the UAE.
Speaking to the media, Akmal underlined the need for a balanced squad and a clear strategy. “The bowling unit is not looking complete according to the conditions,” he said. “If spinners don’t play in these conditions, then where else will they play? You are playing with only three bowlers. Many mistakes were made in the tri-series; there will be no room for such errors in the Asia Cup.”
The 43-year-old also stressed proper player utilisation, particularly in the batting order. He pointed out that wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris must be used in his natural role. “The real benefit of Haris is when he bats in the top three. He should not be pushed down the order,” he advised.
On the development of young opener Saim Ayub, Akmal suggested patience. “Saim should be given four to five years of batting experience at the top level. Only then should additional roles be considered. Don’t confuse him with bowling responsibilities right now,” he added.
Looking ahead to Pakistan’s highly anticipated clash against India, Akmal admitted the challenge would be tough. “On paper, India’s team looks very strong. I wish Pakistan beats India, but for that the national team will have to work very hard,” he said.
The Asia Cup 2025, to be played in the T20 format, will also serve as preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. Eight teams will compete, divided into two groups: Pakistan, India, UAE, and Oman in Group A; Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong in Group B.
The tournament opens on September 9 with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong. Pakistan begin their campaign against Oman on September 12 before taking on India in a high-stakes encounter on September 14. They will conclude the group stage against hosts UAE on September 17.
