Pakistan win toss, bat first in high-voltage Asia Cup clash against India

Dubai, September 14, 2025: Pakistan captain won the toss and opted to bat first against arch-rivals India in their high-stakes Asia Cup Group A encounter at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

An India-Pakistan match is always the headline fixture of any tournament, but emotions are running particularly high this time, coming just months after the two nuclear-armed neighbours engaged in a four-day military conflict in May. The clashes, triggered by a terrorist attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam area, nearly escalated into full-scale war before a ceasefire was brokered by the United States.

Bilateral cricket ties between the two nations remain suspended, meaning they now meet only in multinational tournaments, adding to the intensity of the occasion.

India, the reigning T20 world champions, are widely regarded as favourites to retain their Asia Cup crown. They underlined their credentials with a ruthless nine-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates earlier in the week, routing the hosts for just 57 and chasing down the target in 27 balls. The return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and the presence of in-form opener Shubman Gill further bolster their lineup.

Pakistan, meanwhile, come into the contest on the back of a comfortable win over Oman but remain under scrutiny for their inconsistent batting. The absence of former skippers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan is a significant blow, though the team will draw confidence from their recent triumph in a T20 tri-series in the UAE, also featuring Afghanistan.

With the Dubai crowd packed to capacity and millions more watching across the globe, Sunday’s contest is being billed as the marquee clash of the Asia Cup group stage, where sporting rivalry is layered with political and historical undertones.
