Dubai, September 19, 2025: Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage has been struck by personal tragedy during the ongoing ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025, as his father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away in Colombo on Friday, reportedly due to a heart attack.
Wellalage, 22, is regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest young talents and has been an integral part of the national side in the Asia Cup being staged across the United Arab Emirates.
The news of his father’s death emerged only hours after Wellalage featured in Sri Lanka’s crucial group-stage encounter against Afghanistan at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. In the final over of Afghanistan’s innings, he was hit for five consecutive sixes by veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, a rare and dramatic moment in the match.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has yet to issue an official statement regarding Wellalage’s availability for the remainder of the tournament, though reports suggest the board is making arrangements for him to travel back home to be with his family.
Fans and fellow cricketers have taken to social media to express condolences and support for the young cricketer at this difficult time.
Wellalage, who made his international debut in 2022, has quickly risen to prominence for his left-arm spin and lower-order batting contributions, and is seen as a future leader of Sri Lankan cricket.
