Sohail Afridi dares Centre to impose governor’s rule, says provincial govt ‘not afraid’

Peshawar, December 1,2025: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Monday challenged the federal government to go ahead with imposing governor’s rule in KP, asserting that his administration is fully prepared to face any such move.

Afridi’s remarks came a day after State Minister for Law Aqeel Malik said the federal government was “seriously pondering” invoking governor’s rule in the province due to what he termed deteriorating governance, rising terrorism, and tensions along the Afghanistan border.

Speaking to a private news channel, the PTI-backed chief minister said, “There is no need for any other rule in the province. Those enforcing closed-door policies in KP should understand the consequences.”

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, dismissed the possibility of governor’s rule, saying he does not foresee such an action taking place.

“KP cannot bear governor’s rule,” he warned, adding that the provincial government is committed to eliminating terrorism.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, responding to the KP government’s criticism, said governor’s rule remains a constitutional option available to all federal governments.

“Whenever governance is poor, such discussions naturally begin,” Tarar remarked, pointing directly at the PTI-led KP administration.

Senator Faisal Vawda, speaking to journalists outside Parliament House, said that if the law-and-order situation in KP continues to deteriorate, governor’s rule could indeed become a reality.

Vawda—once a close ally of PTI founder Imran Khan—cautioned CM Afridi to fulfil his responsibilities diligently, warning that even a “minor mistake” under the high court’s orders could lead to his disqualification.

He added that the PTI founder’s attempts to influence the situation would not bear fruit, saying: “The wall will not give or receive anything.”

Vawda further said he preferred that Faisal Karim Kundi continue as KP’s governor, adding that “any other name would not be a political appointment.”

The senator also suggested that the KP chief minister’s issues could be resolved through meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.

“President Asif Ali Zardari holds the key to every problem,” Vawda said.
