Karachi, February 21, 2026: The Sindh Assembly on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution rejecting any move to carve out Karachi as a separate province, declaring the metropolis an “integral and inseparable part” of Sindh.

The resolution was tabled by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who strongly condemned what he termed “divisive statements calling for the breakup of Sindh or the separation of Karachi.”

Addressing the House, the chief minister said any attempt to divide Sindh or detach Karachi from the province was against history, the spirit of the Constitution, democratic norms, and the collective will of the people of Sindh.

“This House unequivocally condemns and rejects any conspiracy aimed at the division of Sindh or the creation of a separate province comprising Karachi,” he said.

He further declared that Karachi “is, and shall forever remain, an integral and inseparable part of Sindh.”

A post from the official X account of the Sindh chief minister echoed the resolution, stating: “Today, the Sindh Assembly has made it clear: Sindh’s unity is sacred. Karachi is inseparable from Sindh — yesterday, today, and forever. We stand united for our homeland.”

The resolution comes in response to calls by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) to declare Karachi a federal territory under Articles 148 and 149 of the Constitution.

At a press conference in Karachi on January 22, MQM-P leader and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal raised the demand following a deadly fire at Gul Plaza, which claimed more than 70 lives and left dozens injured. The blaze, which erupted on January 17, took nearly two days to be extinguished, affecting around 1,200 shops.

Subsequently, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar urged Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to remove the Sindh chief minister, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon over the tragedy. He further demanded that Karachi be handed over to the Centre if the provincial government failed to fulfil its responsibilities.
