Islamabad, March 9, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a cash prize of PKR 1.5 million for each member of the national hockey team after Pakistan secured qualification for the 2026 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup, ending an eight-year absence from the prestigious global tournament.

The national side booked their place in the tournament through an impressive performance in the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers held in Egypt, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan hockey and raising hopes of a revival of the sport in the country.

Upon their arrival at Islamabad International Airport, the players received a rousing welcome from government officials and supporters. The reception was attended by Federal Parliamentary Secretary Kiran Dar, officials from the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination, and representatives of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

The squad was greeted with flower petals, garlands, and bouquets in recognition of their achievement, as fans and officials celebrated the team’s return to the global stage.

PHF President Mohyuddin Wani met the players and coaching staff and commended their determination throughout the qualifiers. He emphasised the need for intensive preparations and strategic planning as the team gears up for upcoming international assignments.

Wani expressed confidence that the squad could build on its recent success and restore Pakistan’s traditional strength in world hockey.

As part of preparations for the World Cup, Pakistan will participate in the FIH Pro League, where they are scheduled to face leading teams including Belgium men’s national field hockey team, Spain men’s national field hockey team, India men’s national field hockey team, and England men’s national field hockey team in warm-up matches.

The 2026 Hockey World Cup will begin on August 14 and will be jointly hosted by Belgium and Netherlands.

Pakistan delivered a largely impressive campaign during the qualifiers, remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage before losing 4-1 to England in the final.

Their journey started with a thrilling 5-4 victory over China men’s national field hockey team, with Rana Waheed scoring twice. The team followed it up with a 5-3 win against Malaysia men’s national field hockey team and a 4-2 triumph over Austria men’s national field hockey team, where Abu Mahmood netted a brace.

The decisive moment came in the semi-finals, where Pakistan edged past the Japan men’s national field hockey team 4-3, securing their place in the World Cup for the first time since 2022.

The qualification has been widely welcomed by fans and officials alike, who see it as a renewed opportunity for Pakistan to reclaim its legacy in international hockey, a sport in which the country has historically enjoyed global success.
