Islamabad, April 7, 2026: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani attended a solemn commemoration of the 32nd anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda as the Chief Guest, organized by the High Commission of Rwanda at a local Islamabad hotel.

Addressing the gathering, Gilani described the 1994 genocide as “one of the darkest chapters in modern human history,” recalling that over one million innocent lives were brutally taken within just 100 days, leaving families shattered and communities scarred. He expressed profound grief and solidarity with the people of Rwanda, paying tribute to their resilience and remarkable journey toward unity, reconciliation, and national rebuilding.

Highlighting the shared experiences of Pakistan, Gilani drew parallels to the violence and forced migrations during the country’s independence, emphasizing that such historical tragedies strengthen empathy and solidarity between nations. He stressed that remembrance is both an act of mourning and a call to conscience, warning that unchecked hatred can lead to unimaginable consequences, while unity, tolerance, and justice can pave the way for peace.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s principled stance, the Senate Chairman emphasized the country’s commitment to peace, justice, and protection of human dignity, urging the international community to strengthen institutions, promote inclusive governance, and nurture education that fosters empathy and mutual respect. He underscored that silence in the face of injustice amounts to complicity and called on all stakeholders to renew their dedication to stand against hatred in all its forms.

The ceremony was attended by federal ministers, foreign ambassadors, parliamentarians, media representatives, and members of civil society. Gilani expressed gratitude to Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Fatou Hareiman, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the Rwandan people.
