Islamabad, April 21, 2026: Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday urged collective action to address growing environmental challenges, stressing that protecting the planet has become one of the most pressing shared responsibilities of the present time.
In his message marking Earth Day, Gilani said this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the crucial role of collective human effort in ensuring the survival and well-being of Earth.
He noted that the impacts of climate change are intensifying worldwide and are increasingly visible in Pakistan, with rising temperatures, water scarcity, air pollution, and deforestation posing serious threats to both the environment and future generations.
The Senate chairman emphasized that addressing these challenges requires not only policy interventions but also meaningful changes in individual behavior and societal lifestyles. He pointed out that steps such as tree plantation, responsible use of water and energy, reducing plastic consumption, and promoting cleanliness—though seemingly small—can collectively make a significant impact.
Gilani also appreciated the role of educational institutions, civil society, and youth in raising environmental awareness and advancing sustainable practices.
Highlighting the role of the Upper House, he said the Senate has made progress in environmental protection through legislation, committee engagement, and policy oversight. He added that several initiatives aimed at tackling pollution, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainable development are currently under consideration.
Reaffirming that Pakistan’s future depends on a clean and secure environment, Gilani urged citizens to treat Earth Day not merely as a symbolic occasion but as a continuous commitment to environmentally responsible living.
He concluded that with coordinated and constructive efforts, achieving a sustainable and prosperous future remains well within reach.
