Tehran/Islamabad, May 22, 2026: Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday as part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at easing regional tensions, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Upon arrival, Field Marshal Asim Munir was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the reception.

Security sources said the visit would include discussions on ongoing US-Iran negotiations, regional peace and stability, and other matters of mutual interest. The field marshal is also expected to meet senior Iranian officials and key personalities during the visit.

The development comes as diplomatic efforts intensify to de-escalate tensions in the region. According to Reuters, a Qatari negotiating team also arrived in Tehran on Friday in coordination with the United States to help facilitate a potential agreement aimed at ending the conflict and resolving outstanding issues with Iran.

The report noted that Qatar, which has previously played mediation roles in regional conflicts including the Gaza war, has re-engaged diplomatically despite recent tensions stemming from attacks involving Iranian missiles and drones during the latest conflict.

Last month, Field Marshal Asim Munir concluded a three-day visit to Iran, during which he emphasized the importance of dialogue, de-escalation, and diplomatic engagement for achieving a peaceful resolution of the US-Iran conflict.

According to ISPR, the field marshal, accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and a Pakistani delegation, met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters Ali Abdollahi.

The discussions focused on regional security, diplomatic engagement, and collaborative measures aimed at promoting long-term stability in the Middle East.

ISPR said the field marshal conveyed Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating a negotiated settlement to regional conflicts and strengthening historic ties between Pakistan and Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement and its role in facilitating dialogue efforts, describing the bilateral relationship as strong and enduring.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire with Iran had been extended following requests from Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to allow diplomatic negotiations to continue.

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said the extension was granted to provide time for Iranian leaders and representatives to formulate a unified proposal, while maintaining military preparedness during the negotiation process.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Trump for accepting Pakistan’s request to extend the ceasefire and expressed hope that all sides would continue to observe the truce and work toward a comprehensive peace agreement during the next round of talks scheduled in Islamabad.
