Islamabad, August 21, 2026: The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) celebrated the 59th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a reception highlighting the bloc’s unity, diversity, cultural heritage and commitment to regional cooperation.
The reception, held at the Islamabad Marriott Hotel, was attended by representatives of the Government of Pakistan, diplomatic missions, international organisations, the private sector, civil society and friends of ASEAN in Pakistan.
The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad comprises the diplomatic missions of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The celebration commemorated ASEAN’s establishment on August 8, 1967, and underscored its longstanding commitment to peace, cooperation, friendship and shared prosperity. This year’s celebrations were held under ASEAN’s 2026 chairship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” reflecting the bloc’s resolve to address emerging challenges collectively while pursuing new opportunities.
Philippine Ambassador and ACI Chair Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, in his welcome remarks, said ASEAN’s strength lay in its ability to promote peace, dialogue and cooperation despite the diversity of cultures, languages, religions and political systems among its member states.
He also highlighted ASEAN’s growing economic dynamism, openness to international partnerships and the potential offered by its young, educated, creative and digitally connected population.
Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi attended the ceremony and conveyed warm felicitations from the Government and people of Pakistan to the governments and peoples of ASEAN member states.
The minister highlighted ASEAN’s transformation over nearly six decades into a dynamic and increasingly integrated regional community of more than 700 million people, with a combined economy approaching $4 trillion.
He also underscored the longstanding engagement between Pakistan and ASEAN and stressed the potential for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
A major attraction of the evening was an ASEAN cultural showcase featuring country booths established by the ASEAN diplomatic missions in Islamabad. The booths displayed traditional crafts, products, national motifs and other elements of the cultural heritage of the respective member states.
Guests were also offered a variety of traditional and speciality dishes from across Southeast Asia at an ASEAN Food Station, providing an opportunity to experience the region’s diverse culinary traditions.
The cultural programme featured performances representing different Southeast Asian traditions, including traditional dances, martial arts and contemporary presentations.
The event also highlighted the importance of people-to-people contacts in further strengthening Pakistan-ASEAN relations through culture, tourism, education, business and sustained engagement.
The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Pakistan for their hospitality and thanked guests, partners and friends of ASEAN for participating in the celebration.
The 59th ASEAN Day celebration served as a reminder of the organisation’s enduring strength and its ability to find common ground among diverse member states while working towards a more peaceful, prosperous and cooperative future.
