Leeds, August 21, 2026: England produced a ruthless bowling display at Headingley on Friday to crush Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the opening Test of the series, completing victory before tea on the third day.
Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed eight wickets apiece across the match as England’s four-pronged pace attack dismantled Pakistan’s batting twice. Jofra Archer added three wickets and also contributed a brisk unbeaten 23 in England’s first innings, while Joe Root marked his return as England’s full-time Test captain with a commanding victory.
Pakistan, bowled out for 171 in their first innings, were dismissed for just 135 in their second, surrendering the match in 1,053 balls. The result equalled the second-fastest victory of Root’s 66-Test captaincy, matching England’s innings win over Ireland at Lord’s in 2019. Their 2018 victory over India at Lord’s remains the fastest.
England had earlier piled up 366 for eight declared, with Harry Brook leading the scoring with 91, Jordan Cox making 73, Root contributing 66 and Dan Lawrence completing a composed half-century with 51. Pakistan’s left-arm spinner Ali Usman was the pick of their bowlers, taking five wickets for 92 runs.
Resuming on Friday with a substantial overnight lead of 195 runs, England quickly extended their advantage to 238 within the first 38 minutes. Archer provided the late flourish, smashing an unbeaten 23 from 25 balls before England wrapped up their innings.
Pakistan’s second innings then unravelled almost immediately.
Archer struck first, removing Imam-ul-Haq after the opener edged a delivery that climbed sharply and was caught behind by Jamie Smith. Azan Awais, who was making his first Test appearance in England, briefly offered resistance and struck a boundary through point, but his stay ended at nine when he flicked loosely towards leg gully, where Root had positioned himself.
At 13 for two, Pakistan were already in serious trouble.
Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood attempted to rebuild the innings with a 38-run partnership, but Robinson broke through when Shafique edged a delivery that moved just enough to find Harry Brook at second slip.
Pakistan reached lunch at 59 for three, but the collapse accelerated after the interval.
Tongue, who had already taken four wickets in an 11-ball burst during Pakistan’s first innings, returned to devastating effect. Saud Shakeel fell to a loose flick after Root had stationed Dan Lawrence in a deep catching position behind square.
Shan Masood followed with the first ball of Tongue’s next over, edging a length delivery to Ben Duckett at first slip. Tongue then removed Pakistan captain Salman Agha at 76 for six after another delivery struck the batter in front of the stumps.
England’s catching and Root’s aggressive field placements complemented the relentless pace attack as Pakistan struggled to withstand the pressure.
Robinson soon joined the demolition, striking with his first ball after replacing Tongue. Ali Usman edged behind, with Jordan Cox completing a sharp catch at third slip.
Robinson then removed Khurram Shahzad to draw level with Tongue on eight wickets for the match, leaving Pakistan nine down and facing an innings defeat.
Mohammad Rizwan offered Pakistan’s only meaningful resistance, scoring 41 from 39 deliveries and briefly raising the possibility of extending the contest into the evening. However, he eventually miscued a pull and was caught by Gus Atkinson, who claimed his first wicket of the match.
Three balls later, Mohammad Abbas top-edged a swipe towards point, bringing the innings and the match to an emphatic conclusion.
The victory underlined England’s dominance in all departments, with their pace attack maintaining relentless pressure while Root’s inventive field settings repeatedly produced opportunities.
For Pakistan, the defeat exposed serious weaknesses in their batting against England’s disciplined seam attack and leaves them with significant questions to answer ahead of the remaining Tests.
England’s comprehensive win also gives Root an ideal start to his return as full-time Test captain, while the hosts will take considerable confidence from the form of their pace attack heading into the rest of the series.
