ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan's hosting fate hangs in the balance

Dubai, November 24, 2024-The future of the Champions Trophy remains uncertain as the International Cricket Council (ICC) faces mounting pressure, potentially failing to make a decision in Pakistan’s favor due to external influences.

While Indian media has openly supported the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s stance, Pakistan’s hosting of the tournament continues to hang in the balance, overshadowed by uncertainty.

Pakistan is the designated host of the event, but the Indian government and BCCI’s refusal to send their team has placed the ICC in a challenging position. Complicating matters, the broadcaster’s deadline for finalizing the schedule has already passed.

Recent reports in Indian media suggested that the ICC has scheduled a meeting for November 26 to discuss a hybrid model for the tournament, aimed at appeasing Pakistan. However, sources close to the ICC have dismissed these reports as baseless.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has delivered a clear message to both the ICC and BCCI: Pakistan will not back down from hosting the event. He stated, “If anyone chooses not to participate, so be it, but the tournament will be held in Pakistan. We will not accept a hybrid model.”

The PCB has also hinted at the possibility of refusing to play in ICC tournaments against India if the latter continues its inflexible stance regarding the Champions Trophy.

If the PCB decides to withdraw its team from the Champions Trophy due to government policy, the ICC could face substantial financial losses. Broadcasters have invested heavily, with billions of dollars tied to the prospect of Pakistan-India matches, which are the tournament’s biggest draw.

To secure the hosting rights, Pakistan will require the support of allied cricket boards during voting in ICC meetings. However, India’s financial influence could sway many boards to align with its position.

A final decision regarding whether Pakistan will retain the hosting rights for its first major ICC event since the 1996 World Cup is expected by Tuesday.
