Islamabad, September 24, 2026: A parliamentary delegation from the Maldives, led by People’s Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah, visited the Capital Office of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), where both sides discussed ways to transform the longstanding brotherly relations between Pakistan and the Maldives into a stronger economic partnership.
FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh welcomed the Maldivian parliamentary delegation and emphasised the significant potential for expanding bilateral trade, investment and business-to-business relations.
The meeting was attended by FPCCI Vice President Tariq Jadoon, Capital Office Chairman Karim Aziz Malik, Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association Chairman Sheikh Umar Rehan, Member of the National Assembly Shaista Khan Jadoon, the High Commissioner of Maldives to Pakistan and representatives of the business community.
Atif Ikram Sheikh said Pakistan and the Maldives enjoyed longstanding brotherly relations that needed to be translated into stronger economic cooperation.
“There is vast potential to enhance trade, investment and business linkages between Pakistan and the Maldives,” he said, stressing the need to promote direct contacts and business-to-business meetings between the two countries’ business communities.
He said FPCCI was ready to play its role in strengthening private-sector linkages between Pakistan and the Maldives and creating greater opportunities for Pakistani products in the Maldivian market.
Sheikh also invited Maldivian investors to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan, saying tourism could emerge as an important area of economic cooperation between the two countries.
He said bilateral trade could be increased through exchanges of business delegations and joint trade activities, while stronger private-sector linkages could create new opportunities for investment and employment in both countries.
Speaking on the occasion, People’s Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah said the Maldives was interested in further expanding trade and economic cooperation with Pakistan.
He said there was considerable scope for creating more opportunities for Pakistani businesses and products in the Maldivian market.
Abdullah said Pakistan and the Maldives could expand cooperation in tourism, hospitality and services, adding that parliamentary relations could also contribute to the promotion of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The Maldivian speaker said his country wanted to further strengthen its engagement with Pakistan’s business community and expressed the resolve of both sides to continue working together to deepen bilateral cooperation.
The participants also agreed to further strengthen existing areas of cooperation and explore new sectors for mutually beneficial economic and commercial collaboration.
