Rawalpindi, October 7,2026: Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and highlighted the country’s contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions during a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Guterres, who is on a two-day official visit to Pakistan, called on Field Marshal Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, the prevailing regional security environment and the UN’s role in promoting international peace and security, ISPR said.
They also exchanged views on regional stability, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India’s abeyance of the Indus Waters Treaty and terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
During the meeting, Field Marshal Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and highlighted the country’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions. He also appreciated the UN’s role in advancing peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation.
According to ISPR, Guterres paid tribute to the sacrifices and contributions of Pakistan and its armed forces in the fight against terrorism and their role in UN peacekeeping missions.
The UN secretary general also acknowledged Pakistan’s continued commitment to international peace and security and specifically appreciated its efforts toward the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts, ISPR said.
Guterres’ meeting with the army chief was part of his two-day visit to Pakistan, during which he also held meetings with senior Pakistani leadership.
On the first day of his visit, the UN secretary general met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and appreciated Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to the UN as well as its diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue, mediation and de-escalation.
Addressing a joint media stakeout with Dar, Guterres also praised Pakistan’s role in mediating between the United States and Iran and called on the parties to end the conflict and return to diplomacy.
President Asif Ali Zardari also conferred the Nishan-i-Imtiaz on Guterres in recognition of his distinguished international service, leadership of the UN and contribution to global peace and development.
During a separate meeting, President Zardari appreciated Guterres’ principled leadership and his efforts to promote international peace, dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The president also praised the UN chief’s constructive engagement with Pakistan and his attention to the concerns of developing countries.
