Champions Trophy- Indian government's stance raises questions on BCCI's position

Mumbai, November 29,2024- The Indian government’s stance on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has cast doubts on the position of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, while speaking to Indian media, revealed that discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding the tournament are ongoing. He stated that the ICC is actively working to resolve the matter, adding, “The BCCI’s position is that we will act according to the instructions of the government.”

This statement follows a query directed at India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) during a weekly briefing. While addressing questions on the Champions Trophy, the MEA spokesperson refrained from explicitly outlining the government’s position. Instead, he referred to a BCCI statement, citing “security concerns in Pakistan” as the reason for India’s inability to participate.

However, as of Friday evening, no such statement from the BCCI had been made public. The MEA’s remarks have created ambiguity around the BCCI’s earlier claim that government approval was the main hurdle. Now, it appears the security concerns were raised directly by the BCCI, creating a potential conflict in their narrative.

ICC meeting and resolution efforts

Amid the deadlock, the ICC held a Board meeting on Friday to discuss the future of the Champions Trophy. The 15-minute virtual meeting concluded with an agreement that Pakistan and India, along with the ICC, would collaborate to find a mutually acceptable solution. It was decided that 2-3 neutral member boards might also be involved in the process, which is expected to conclude within 24-48 hours.

This development follows India’s steadfast stance and Pakistan’s firm position, with both sides trying to navigate the diplomatic and logistical challenges surrounding the tournament.
