Brisbane, December 18, 2024: Celebrated Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket, effective immediately, after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane.
Speaking at a press conference, Ashwin confirmed this was his last day as an Indian cricketer across all formats. While he intends to continue playing club-level cricket, including the IPL with Chennai Super Kings, he said, “This is my last day [for India].”
Ashwin expressed gratitude to his teammates and the BCCI, highlighting memories shared with players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane. He also acknowledged the role of fielders and coaches in his success, noting their contribution to his 537 Test wickets – the second-highest for India, behind Anil Kumble.
Rohit Sharma, present during the announcement, praised Ashwin’s decision, saying, “These are personal choices, and Ashwin has the team’s full support.”
Ashwin’s international career began in 2010 and includes highlights such as the 2011 World Cup victory. In 106 Tests, he took 537 wickets and scored 3503 runs with six centuries. He also played 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is, finishing with 156 and 72 wickets, respectively.
Though Ashwin has struggled for consistency recently, with limited appearances overseas, his legacy as one of India’s greatest match-winners remains undisputed.
Ashwin, 38, hinted at remaining involved in cricket, saying, “This game has given me everything. See you soon.”
