Kohat, January 1, 2025: In a landmark breakthrough for regional stability, the Kurram Valley has secured a peace agreement following the successful conclusion of a Grand Jirga in Kohat. After weeks of intense deliberations, both conflicting parties have signed the accord, marking a pivotal step toward lasting peace and development in the area.

KP government spokesperson, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, announced the agreement today, revealing that one of the warring factions had signed the peace deal a few days prior, with the second party finalizing their commitment today. The agreement includes the surrender of weapons and the demolition of bunkers by both sides, signalling a mutual dedication to ending hostilities.

“This peace agreement ushers in a new era of peace and development for Kurram,” Barrister Saif stated. He emphasized that the region, long troubled by unrest, will soon experience restored calm and security thanks to the collaborative efforts of the government, local administration, and the involved parties.

The three-week-long Grand Jirga, overseen by Kohat Division Commissioner Moatasim Billah Shah, represents a significant gesture of cooperation. Both parties have committed to dismantling private bunkers and handing over their arms to provincial authorities within a month. Additionally, the government plans to deploy a specialized force of 399 members to secure the routes leading to Kurram, ensuring the region remains safe and accessible.

The formal announcement of the Kurram Peace Agreement is scheduled to take place at the Governor House in Peshawar. The agreement binds both parties to implement decisions made during the Apex Committee meetings, with provisions for addressing any future concerns through local commissioners.

Key components of the accord include:

  • Disarmament: Both parties agree to surrender their weapons and demolish bunkers within one month.
  • Security Measures: Establishment of a special force to safeguard access routes to Kurram.
  • Access Restoration: Reopening of roads to Kurram once peace is firmly established, with ongoing helicopter services for essential supplies until then.
  • Implementation Timeline: Full compliance required by February 1, 2025, to ensure timely dismantling of military infrastructure.

The agreement also addresses previous deadlocks that hindered progress, such as disputes over weapon deposits and road closures. By resolving these issues, the Grand Jirga has quelled widespread protests and alleviated public concerns about prolonged instability.

“The resolution of this conflict is a testament to the resilience and commitment of all parties involved,” Commissioner Shah remarked. “We are optimistic that Kurram will now move towards a peaceful and prosperous future.”

This peace deal not only ends years of territorial disputes but also aims to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for Kurram’s residents. As the community begins to heal, the successful negotiation sets a powerful precedent for conflict resolution in the region.
