Islamabad, September 11, 2024-Residents of the federal capital will not receive the Rs14 per unit electricity relief announced by the Punjab chief minister for September. A notification from the Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO) stated that the Punjab government has withdrawn the relief for this month.
According to sources, the decision was influenced by pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as the government is seeking to finalize a $7 billion loan agreement. Consumers in Islamabad and surrounding areas will now face higher electricity rates, following the federal government’s notification of rate hikes effective from July 1. The government had increased rates by up to 51% to meet IMF conditions but has yet to secure the loan approval.
