Islamabad, December 12, 2024: Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, has written to the chief ministers of all four provinces, urging them to clear overdue electricity bills.
In a statement issued by the Power Division on Thursday, it was noted that the energy minister, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has initiated reforms aimed at improving electricity companies and ensuring affordable electricity for consumers. These reforms focus on increasing financial resources, reducing power theft, and improving the collection of overdue bills from consumers.
The letter emphasizes the urgency of settling the unpaid electricity bills, which are negatively impacting ongoing reforms in the energy sector. Leghari pointed out that various provincial departments’ failure to clear their dues is placing a significant financial strain on power companies and may lead to disruptions in electricity supply.
The letters call on the chief ministers to take immediate action, stressing that the non-payment of bills is not only burdening the federal government but also exacerbating the circular debt crisis. The federal government has expressed hope for the cooperation of provincial governments to stabilize the energy sector.
