Lahore, November 11, 2024 – The Punjab government has implemented strict measures to curb the health impact of worsening smog levels, ordering a complete ban on outdoor activities and an early closure of markets across the province until November 17. This directive affects major cities including Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, which remain heavily shrouded in toxic smog.
According to the official notification, all markets are required to close by 8 PM, while outdoor sports, exhibitions, and dining are prohibited. Religious gatherings are exempt from the ban. Department stores and grocery outlets are also exempted; however, any violations will be addressed under the Punjab Environment Protection Act.
Multan recorded the highest Air Quality Index (AQI) at a dangerous level of 950, while Lahore and Rawalpindi reported AQIs of 560 and 254, respectively. These extreme pollution levels have led to a surge in respiratory issues, with hospitals reporting over 35,000 cases last week related to eye irritation, skin conditions, and respiratory problems.
Highway authorities have also closed multiple sections of major motorways due to low visibility, including parts of the M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5 motorways. In response, environmental expert Ali Jabir has cautioned vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the elderly, to limit outdoor exposure, emphasizing the need for warm fluids to mitigate respiratory irritation.
To further tackle the crisis, Punjab’s Environment Directorate General has mandated that all shopping malls install air purifiers.
