Islamabad, December 16, 2024: Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, acknowledged on Monday that Pakistan’s internet speed remains below the required standards. She stressed the growing importance of fast and reliable internet for the country’s digital transformation and economic growth.
Speaking at the National Broadband Network Forum, Shaza Fatima highlighted the government’s commitment to improving Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. “While progress has been made, the internet speed is still not where it needs to be,” she said. “However, with ongoing initiatives, we are optimistic about significant improvements in the coming years.”
The minister outlined two major initiatives aimed at addressing this issue: the Fiberisation Policy and the rollout of 5G technology.
Additionally, she announced the formation of a National Digital Commission, to be chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The commission will include the Chief Ministers of all provinces and key provincial stakeholders. It will develop a comprehensive five-year action plan to address digital challenges and encourage technological investment in Pakistan.
The Digital Pakistan Bill, aimed at fostering technological growth and innovation, will be presented in the National Assembly today. Shaza Fatima expressed confidence in bipartisan support for the bill, which is expected to lay the foundation for the National Digital Commission.
“Pakistan faces significant cyber threats, with incidents reported daily. Strengthening cybersecurity and protecting data remain top priorities for the government,” the minister added, emphasizing efforts to safeguard Pakistan’s digital assets.
She also confirmed plans to auction the 5G spectrum in April 2025, alongside enhancing 4G services, to accelerate the country’s digital transition and upgrade its internet capabilities.
“We are determined to position Pakistan as a leader in the digital economy. This requires robust infrastructure, secure systems, and widespread internet access,” Shaza Fatima concluded.
