Islamabad, November 24, 2024 – Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has pledged to “protect Islamabad” as PTI convoys from across the country converge on the capital for a protest called by party founder Imran Khan. The demonstration is aimed at opposing what Khan termed a “stolen mandate,” unjust arrests, and the controversial 26th amendment, which he claims has entrenched a “dictatorial regime.”
Speaking at D-Chowk, the main protest site, Naqvi said: “One option is to let them paralyze Islamabad. The other is to protect the city.” He confirmed that internet services had been suspended, though mobile connectivity remained intact, and emphasized efforts to minimize public inconvenience.
Naqvi stated that the protest area is a high-security zone monitored by senior law enforcement and warned that any trespassers would face arrest. He criticized PTI for prioritizing protests over attending funerals in Kurram, following recent violent clashes there.
Road closures and public disruptions
Key routes in Islamabad and other cities, including Rawat T-Cross and Chungi No.26, were blocked, forcing citizens to navigate through limited internal roads. Many residents expressed frustration over the disruptions, calling for political resolution to avoid further instability.
State broadcaster PTV reported a stark contrast in Lahore’s Liberty Chowk, once a hub for PTI rallies, which appeared deserted. Protests have also triggered closures of intercity bus operations and heightened security at railway stations.
Internet shutdown and arrests
NetBlocks confirmed that WhatsApp and internet services faced restrictions nationwide to counter potential disruptions. Meanwhile, PTI claimed several arrests, including a family detained at D-Chowk, and accused authorities of tear-gassing peaceful demonstrators.
Convoys from across pakistan
Led by key PTI leaders, convoys from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Balochistan made their way to Islamabad. KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, leading the largest convoy, called on supporters to rally at D-Chowk until their demands were met.
Prominent figures like MNAs Asad Qaiser and Zartaj Gul, KP minister Taimur Khan Jhagra, and others joined the protest, emphasizing the need for peaceful demonstrations. PTI also urged participants to carry English placards to amplify their message globally.
The last PTI protest in Islamabad turned violent, resulting in casualties and arrests. Authorities are determined to prevent a repeat, while PTI insists on continuing its campaign for justice and democracy.Bottom of Form
