Islamabad, October 23, 2024- President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday has formally signed the notification to appoint Justice Yahya Afridi, a Supreme Court judge, as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan.
The president made the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi for a period of three years with effect from October 26, 2024, according to a President House press release.
The appointment was made in exercise of the powers conferred under Articles 175 A (3), 177 and 179 of the constitution. A notification has been issued in this regard.
It is noteworthy that yesterday, a 12-member special parliamentary committee approved the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Following this, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent a recommendation to the President of Pakistan to appoint Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Who is Justice Yahya Afridi?
Justice Yahya Afridi was born on January 23, 1965, in Dera Ismail Khan and received his early education at Aitchison College, Lahore, graduated from Government College, Lahore, and obtained a Master’s degree in Economics from Punjab University, Lahore. He also earned an LLM degree from Jesus College, Cambridge University, on a Commonwealth Scholarship.
Justice Yahya Afridi began his legal practice in 1990 as a lawyer in the High Court and started practicing in the Supreme Court in 2004. He also served as Assistant Advocate General for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In 2010, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Peshawar High Court, and on March 15, 2012, he was confirmed as a permanent judge.
On December 30, 2016, Justice Yahya Afridi took oath as the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 28, 2018.
