Islamabad, March 14, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended financial assistance and job support to Pakistani footballer Muhammad Riaz, who recently gained public attention after a video of him selling jalebis went viral.

During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, Shehbaz handed Riaz a cheque worth Rs2.5 million ($8,916) and assured him of a government job in a federal department of his choice.

Riaz, who represented Pakistan in the 2018 Asian Games, was forced into street vending due to financial struggles, sparking criticism of the government and sports authorities for neglecting national athletes.

Commending Riaz’s dedication and resilience, Shehbaz urged him to continue playing football and contributing to the sport’s growth in Pakistan.

“Pakistani youth are a valuable asset of the country,” the prime minister stated. “Providing resources and opportunities for athletes to compete at the international level is a top priority of the government.”

He also directed officials to formulate a long-term strategy for the financial stability and welfare of national athletes.

Riaz’s plight reflects the broader issues plaguing Pakistani football, including administrative mismanagement, political interference, and lack of investment. The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has repeatedly faced FIFA suspensions due to internal disputes, further stalling the sport’s development. On Wednesday, the Pakistan Football League (PFL) announced a Rs1 million ($3,573) cash prize for Riaz and a prominent role in the league to support his career.

The PFL, backed by foreign investment, aims to professionalize football in Pakistan and develop local talent. Expressing gratitude, Riaz thanked the prime minister for his support and for taking steps to improve the condition of athletes in Pakistan.
