CBI closes investigation into Sushant Rajput’s death, finds no evidence of foul play

Mumbai, March 23, 2025: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed closure reports in two cases related to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, concluding that no evidence suggests foul play. The reports were submitted to courts in Mumbai and Patna, effectively bringing an end to years of speculation and legal proceedings.

Sushant’s father, KK Singh, had filed an FIR in Patna in 2020, accusing actress Rhea Chakraborty and others of abetment to suicide, financial fraud, and mental harassment. The case was later transferred to the CBI. Rhea, in turn, lodged a counter-complaint in Mumbai, alleging that Sushant’s sisters had procured a fake medical prescription for him.

After an extensive probe, the CBI has concluded that there was no criminal conspiracy or external involvement in Sushant’s death. Advocate Satish Maneshinde, representing Rhea Chakraborty, welcomed the decision, stating, “We are grateful to the CBI for thoroughly investigating all aspects of the case. The false narratives pushed on social and electronic media were completely uncalled for. During the pandemic, when people were glued to their screens, innocent individuals were unjustly vilified.”

Maneshinde further highlighted the hardships faced by Rhea, who spent 27 days in jail before being granted bail by Justice Sarang V. Kotwal. “This country remains a beacon of hope for those seeking justice, thanks to our vibrant judiciary. Satya Meva Jayate,” he added.

Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020. His postmortem, conducted at Mumbai’s Cooper Hospital, confirmed asphyxia as the cause of death. The case sparked widespread controversy, leading to multiple investigations by the CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Despite the CBI’s findings, KK Singh remains unconvinced. Last month, ahead of a Bombay High Court hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to his son’s death, he reiterated his belief that Sushant could not have died by suicide. Expressing disappointment with the CBI’s handling of the case, he stated, “The agency didn’t act in time, but I still hope the court will deliver justice soon.”

Singh also addressed speculation about the alleged involvement of Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray, stating, “We have heard what the media says, but the truth will be determined in court. What I know for sure is that my son would not have taken his own life.”

With the CBI officially closing the investigation, the case that gripped the nation for nearly five years has finally reached its legal conclusion—though questions and emotions surrounding Sushant’s untimely demise continue to linger.
