Ambassador Asim Iftikhar presents credentials to UN Secretary-General

New York, April 3, 2025: Pakistan’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Asim reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter. Secretary-General Guterres congratulated him on his new role and extended best wishes for his tenure.

Ambassador Asim succeeds Ambassador Munir Akram, who completed his tenure as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN on March 31, 2025.

A seasoned diplomat, Ambassador Asim has held key positions, including Ambassador to France and Monaco and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO (2022–2024), Ambassador to Thailand and Permanent Representative to UN ESCAP (2017–2021), spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, Member of Pakistan’s UN Security Council delegation (2003–2004, 2012–2013), serving as the country’s political coordinator, representative at the Human Rights Council and various UN treaty bodies and Deputy Chef de Cabinet to the UN General Assembly President (2009–2010).

Ambassador Asim joined the Foreign Service in 1993 and has over 30 years of experience, with postings across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the UN.

He holds a gold medal in electrical engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore (1991) and a gold medal in Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Punjab, Lahore (1988).

Born on November 27, 1966, in Lahore, he is married with three daughters.
