Mumbai, April 3, 2025: Fawad Khan’s much-anticipated return to Bollywood after nine years with Abir Gulaal has sparked controversy, as the film faces opposition from political leaders in Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena. The film’s teaser, released on Tuesday, received a warm response from fans, but certain political factions have vowed to block its release in Maharashtra due to Fawad’s involvement.
Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, MNS leader Ameya Khopkar strongly opposed the film’s release, citing the presence of a Pakistani actor.
“We just learned about the film today when the makers announced it. But let us be clear—we will not allow this film to be released in Maharashtra because it features a Pakistani actor. Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be screened here. We are currently gathering more details about the film and will issue a comprehensive statement soon.”
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam also weighed in on the issue, arguing that Pakistani artists have historically struggled to find acceptance among Indian audiences.
“Pakistani films do not attract Indian viewers. While a few may watch them briefly, Pakistani actors have never been able to establish themselves in India. Instead of seeking opportunities in Bollywood, Pakistani artists should focus on working in their own country. The Indian government should have a clear policy on whether to allow Pakistani films and actors to work in India.”
The controversy reignites a long-standing debate. In 2016, following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistani artists—including Fawad Khan—were barred from working in Bollywood. However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition that sought an official ban on Pakistani actors in the Indian film industry.
Directed by Aarti Bagdi, Abir Gulaal is slated for release on May 9, 2025. Whether the film will face distribution challenges in Maharashtra remains to be seen.
