Islamabad, May 1, 2025: In a key development aimed at transforming Islamabad’s public transport system, Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) Muhammad Ali Randhawa chaired a high-level meeting at CDA Headquarters to review progress on the Soft Wheel Electric Tram project and enhance the operational efficiency of Electric Feeder Buses.

The meeting was attended by CDA board members, senior officers from relevant formations, and representatives of the National Radio Transport Corporation (NRTC).

Briefing the attendees, Chairman Randhawa emphasized that modern, eco-friendly, and accessible transport solutions are central to CDA’s long-term urban development agenda. “Providing Islamabad with state-of-the-art transport facilities is our top priority,” he said, noting that electric trams and feeder buses would help reduce air pollution and fuel dependency, while offering citizens convenient and sustainable commuting options.

He directed officials to finalize the feasibility study for the electric tram system with urgency, focusing initially on the city’s busiest routes. Stressing the need for inclusivity, Randhawa instructed that tram compartments be designed with multiple sections, and that accessibility features for persons with disabilities and women be integrated from the outset.

To ensure long-term viability, the Chairman called for the development of a robust financial model, urging officials to minimize reliance on government subsidies by exploring alternative revenue streams such as digital advertising and smart ticketing systems.

Regarding the Electric Feeder Buses, he instructed that route planning be driven by real-time passenger demand data, with high-traffic corridors prioritized. All bus terminals are to be upgraded with modern facilities, including digital display boards for schedules, safety alerts, and commercial advertisements.

Reaffirming CDA’s vision, Randhawa stated, “We aim to phase out subsidies while upholding service quality. These transport initiatives are pivotal to making Islamabad a modern, clean, and commuter-friendly capital.”

He urged public support and participation in CDA’s efforts, expressing confidence that these projects will help redefine the urban mobility landscape of Islamabad.
