Islamabad, May 3, 2025: On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to upholding press freedom, while emphasizing the importance of responsible journalism in a democratic society.

In their separate messages, both leaders paid tribute to journalists in Pakistan and around the world for their dedication, courage, and sacrifices in the pursuit of truth, particularly those reporting from conflict zones such as Gaza and Palestine.

President Zardari described the media as an essential pillar of democracy, crucial for promoting dialogue, exposing corruption, advocating for the marginalized, and highlighting key social, economic, and environmental issues. He underscored that Article 19 of Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech and a free press, within reasonable bounds.

“We have undertaken several steps for the protection and welfare of journalists, but more needs to be done to ensure a safe, secure, and enabling environment for media professionals,” the President said. He emphasized the need for a culture in which journalists can operate without fear or harassment, and urged the media to uphold journalistic ethics, accuracy, and professionalism amid rising disinformation and sensationalism.

He further noted the media’s critical role in educating citizens, promoting civic engagement, and strengthening the democratic process by serving as a bridge between the people and public institutions.

“On this day, let us renew our resolve to protect and promote press freedom as a cornerstone of our democracy,” President Zardari said, adding that he hoped the government would continue to work toward ensuring the safety, dignity, and independence of journalists in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, stressing that the right to freedom of expression must be protected, but also safeguarded against the misuse of media for spreading falsehoods, propaganda, foreign agendas, or political interests.

He praised the responsible conduct of Pakistan’s media in recent weeks, particularly in countering India’s water-related aggression and unfounded accusations with factual and objective reporting.

Both leaders reaffirmed that a free, ethical, and secure media is vital for a robust democratic society and for ensuring accountability, transparency, and public awareness.
