Lahore, May 22, 2025: Newly appointed head coach of the Pakistan national men’s cricket team, Mike Hesson, has set a clear tone ahead of his debut assignment: team selection will be driven by defined roles, not reputations.
In his first detailed interview since assuming the role, Hesson stressed the importance of strategic clarity and performance-based inclusion.
“Every player must fit into a specific role. Selections will not be based on fame or past glories. We are building a side that aligns with our game plan,” said the former New Zealand coach.
Calling it a “golden opportunity”, Hesson said he is passionate about shaping a team that plays modern, exciting, and winning cricket.
“I’m confident I can guide the team forward. We want to play productive cricket that captures the hearts of fans — though I know the challenge is big,” he remarked.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, retaining Salman Ali Agha as captain.
In a bold move, senior players Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been rested for the series.
However, some strong domestic performers, including PSL X’s leading wicket-taker Abbas Afridi, promising left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem, and aggressive batter Haider Ali, were not selected, raising eyebrows among cricket fans and analysts.
The entire series will be played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, with the match schedule expected to be released soon.
The Bangladesh series marks Hesson’s first official assignment as head coach, providing him a crucial opportunity to assess players ahead of Pakistan’s packed T20 calendar.
