Essex, May 29, 2025: Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has rejoined Essex County Cricket Club for the Vitality Blast T20, which kicks off today.

The announcement was made via Essex’s official social media handle, featuring a video of Amir expressing his excitement: “Great to be back here. I am really happy and I am looking forward to seeing you all. I need your support,” he said.

The 33-year-old left-arm pacer first joined Essex in 2017 and played across three seasons. In his previous stint with the club, he appeared in 21 matches, claiming 24 wickets, with his most notable performance coming in 2019, when he took 10 wickets at an average of 20.10, helping Essex achieve a historic double — winning both the Vitality Blast and the County Championship.

Amir, who announced his retirement from international cricket last year, was a crucial figure in Pakistan’s 2009 ICC T20 World Cup-winning squad and ended his international T20 career with 71 wickets in 62 matches at an average of 21.64.

More recently, Amir played for Quetta Gladiators in PSL 10, taking 13 wickets in 9 matches. However, the Gladiators fell short in a nail-biting final, losing to Lahore Qalandars, who chased down a daunting 202-run target — the highest successful chase in a PSL final — courtesy of an unbeaten 59-run partnership between Sikandar Raza and Kusal Perera.

Amir struggled in the final, conceding 41 runs in his four-over spell and taking just one wicket.

Now back at Essex, Amir aims to revitalize his T20 form and bring experience and firepower to the county’s pace attack as the tournament unfolds.
