Islamabad, June 1, 2025: Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA), Chief Commissioner Islamabad, and Director General Civil Defence, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, has reiterated CDA’s unwavering commitment to providing state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly, and accessible transport facilities to residents of the federal capital.
Speaking about recent developments in Islamabad’s urban transport system, Randhawa expressed appreciation for the public’s continued trust in CDA’s efforts, noting that more than 85,000 commuters benefit daily from the city’s growing fleet of electric, air-conditioned buses.
“Providing modern, clean, and accessible transportation is a top priority for the CDA. We are grateful for the public’s trust, which motivates us to improve and expand our services,” said Randhawa.
Islamabad’s public transport system currently includes 30 buses on the Orange Line, 10 buses each on the Blue Line and Green Line and A growing electric fleet of 160 air-conditioned buses, all subsidized by the CDA.
This network has significantly reduced the travel burden in the capital and stands as a testament to CDA’s efforts to develop a sustainable and commuter-friendly infrastructure.
The CDA recently increased the standard fare from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 per ride, a move aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of the service. Randhawa clarified that this adjustment is not intended to burden citizens, but rather to support the sustainability and improvement of services.
He said that previously annual operational cost of the public transport stood at Rs. 5.12 billion, with revenue of Rs. 1.46 billion and annual subsidy of Rs. 3.66 billion. He said that with the increased fares of the public transport expected revenue is Rs. 2.33 billion with required subsidy of Rs. 2.79 billion.
Despite the new fare, CDA will still cover over 54% of total expenses, highlighting its strong commitment to providing affordable and high-quality transport.
The additional revenue generated will be invested in regular bus maintenance, fleet expansion, route diversification, reduced passenger wait times, cleanliness, safety, and overall service improvement, introducing discount packages for regular commuters, credit card-based fare payment systems and promoting electric mobility and environmental sustainability.
Randhawa emphasized that all steps are being taken under a broader vision to transform Islamabad into a model capital city — one that is clean, green, and well-connected.
“We aim to provide long-term, high-quality transport solutions that reduce traffic congestion and promote environmental protection. Our goal is to ensure every citizen has access to safe, affordable, and modern travel options at their doorstep.”
The CDA leadership extended its gratitude to the public for their ongoing cooperation and support. It reassured residents that resolving their daily commute and quality-of-life issues remains a top priority.
