Islamabad, June 24, 2025: In a vibrant display of cultural diplomacy, the Embassy of Romania in Islamabad marked the International Day of the Romanian Blouse for the first time in Pakistan on Tuesday, celebrating Romania’s rich folk traditions and strengthening cross-cultural ties.

The event, held on June 24, brought together members of the Romanian community, foreign diplomats, and prominent Pakistani guests in a festive environment that celebrated the Romanian ie — the traditional blouse that has become a powerful symbol of national identity and artistic heritage.

Attendees were encouraged to wear traditional attire from their own cultures, underscoring the universal language of folk art and the ability of cultural traditions to bridge divides.

An exhibition of authentic Romanian blouses, many of which were handmade and passed down through generations, served as the centerpiece of the evening. Guests also enjoyed traditional Romanian music and cuisine, offering a multisensory experience of the country’s rural customs and hospitality.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Dan Stoenescu welcomed guests and spoke about the significance of the ie in Romanian culture:

“The Romanian blouse is more than a piece of clothing. It is a cultural treasure, a bridge between past and present, and a celebration of women’s creativity and resilience. By sharing this tradition in Islamabad, we celebrate both our identity and our friendship with the people of Pakistan and the international community.”

The International Day of the Romanian Blouse is observed annually on June 24 and coincides with Sânziene, a midsummer Romanian folk celebration rooted in ancient traditions. Initiated by the cultural platform La Blouse Roumaine, the day has evolved into a global celebration, with events held in cities across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

By hosting the event in Islamabad, the Romanian Embassy has now added Pakistan to the growing list of countries where the Romanian ie is honored — a step that not only showcases Romanian culture but also fosters mutual understanding and cultural exchange between Romania and its international partners.
