Bulawayo, July 7, 2025: South African captain Wiaan Mulder etched his name into the history books on Monday as he went to lunch unbeaten on 367 on Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe. However, South Africa declared during the lunch break at 625/5, leaving Mulder just 33 runs short of breaking Brian Lara’s world record of 400 not out, the highest individual score in Test cricket.

Mulder reached his triple century in just 297 balls, making it the second-fastest triple century in Test history, behind Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball triple ton against South Africa in 2008.

In the process, Mulder became only the second South African to score a triple century in Tests, joining Hashim Amla, whose previous national record of 311 not out he comfortably surpassed. The record-breaking moment came as Mulder drove Blessing Muzarabani through the covers for a four.

Mulder’s 367* also became the highest individual score by any batter in an away Test, eclipsing Hanif Mohammad’s iconic 337 against the West Indies in 1958. His marathon innings saw him surpass legendary names such as Sanath Jayasuriya (340), Len Hutton (364), and Sir Garry Sobers (365) — placing him fifth on the all-time list of highest individual scores in Test cricket.

The only innings ahead of Mulder’s 367 are Brian Lara 400*, Matthew Hayden 380, Brian Lara 375 and Mahela Jayawardene 374.

Despite narrowly missing out on the top spot, Mulder’s innings is already being hailed as one of the greatest Test performances in modern cricket, especially for its pace, dominance, and historical significance.
