Islamabad, July 7, 2025: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), provincial administrations, and rescue agencies to remain on high alert in view of the ongoing spell of heavy rains and the potential risk of flooding, particularly along the Indus River and other vulnerable areas.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for immediate precautionary measures and coordinated response efforts to protect lives and property from possible emergency situations.

“The NDMA must enhance coordination with Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and other relevant institutions to ensure an effective and timely response to any flood-related emergencies,” the prime minister directed.

The Prime Minister also instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to utilize all available communication platforms to disseminate accurate, real-time updates to the public regarding potential threats and safety advisories.

He expressed particular concern over the possible release of water from Tarbela Dam, which could exacerbate flooding in downstream districts along the Indus River.

“All provincial governments must launch proactive public awareness campaigns and ensure early warnings reach at-risk communities,” he stressed.

The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has been tasked with identifying flood-prone areas and clearly categorizing regions based on high, medium, or low flood risk. The center will coordinate with the media to ensure timely warnings are issued and residents of vulnerable areas are alerted.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of advance preparedness and instructed the NDMA to ensure that all provincial authorities are fully equipped to respond to any evolving situation.

“Preparedness today can save lives tomorrow. All relevant agencies must act with urgency and coordination,” the prime minister added.
