Islamabad, August 11, 2025: Pakistan has welcomed the Court of Arbitration’s award on the interpretation of key provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty, terming it a reaffirmation of its longstanding position on water rights.
According to the Foreign Office, the award was issued on Friday and published on the court’s website on Monday. It clarifies design criteria for new run-of-river hydropower projects India plans to build on the western rivers—Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus.
In a major ruling, the court directed India to “let flow” the waters of these rivers for Pakistan’s unrestricted use. Its findings on low-level outlets, gated spillways, turbine intakes, and free-board align with Pakistan’s interpretation of the treaty’s provisions.
The court also reaffirmed that its awards are final and binding on both parties—India and Pakistan.
The verdict comes amid heightened tensions, following India’s announcement to suspend implementation of the treaty and its boycott of the arbitration proceedings.
“Pakistan remains committed to the full implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty and expects India to immediately restore normal treaty functions and comply with the court’s decision,” the Foreign Office stated.
