Islamabad, August 12, 2025: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide flood alert, warning of urban flooding, river swells, and landslides as heavy monsoon rains are forecast across Pakistan from August 13 to 15.

According to the NDMA spokesperson, water levels are expected to rise in the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers, with low to medium floods likely at Taunsa, Guddu, Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad barrages. Medium to high flows are also projected in Nullah Dek, Nullah Ek, Palkhu, Hadiyara, Ben, and Basantar streams.

Tarbela Dam is currently at 96% capacity and Mangla Dam at 64%, increasing the risk of downstream flooding.

The Met Office has warned of heavy showers in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot, raising the likelihood of urban flooding in major Punjab cities. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, intense rainfall may trigger landslides and flash floods in the Kabul and Swat rivers.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, Shigar, and Ghanche districts face a dual threat from heavy rain and melting glaciers, which could swell the Hunza, Khunjerab, Shimshal, Baraldo, and Saltoro rivers.

The NDMA said it is in close coordination with federal and provincial agencies to monitor conditions and respond rapidly to emergencies. Residents in high-risk zones have been urged to take precautions and follow official advisories.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department earlier predicted heightened monsoon activity from August 14 to 17 across Islamabad, Kashmir, upper Punjab, KP, and GB, with heavy downpours in some areas. Further rain is expected between August 18 and 21 in parts of Kashmir, Punjab, Balochistan, and KP. Authorities have warned of potential damage to weak structures and uprooting of trees.
