Islamabad, August 20, 2025: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai, chief of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), as the new Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja announced on Wednesday.

Raja confirmed that Khan had finalised Achakzai’s nomination, noting that he also heads the multi-party opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz.

In parallel, Raja said PTI has nominated Azam Khan Swati as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.

The move follows the disqualification of former opposition leaders Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz. Omar Ayub lost his National Assembly seat after being convicted in the May 9 cases by an anti-terrorism court, leading to his removal from the Public Accounts Committee and all standing committees.

Subsequently, the Election Commission of Pakistan issued disqualification notifications for both Ayub and Shibli Faraz, who had been serving as opposition leader in the Senate.

Both PTI leaders have since challenged their disqualification before the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
