Lahore, August 30, 2025: Just as flood-hit Punjab was struggling to cope with high waters, heavy downpours lashed multiple districts, worsening the crisis and leaving thousands more in distress. Rain-swollen streams and rivers have inundated low-lying areas, destroying homes, crops, and roads.
Torrential rains battered Lahore, Chiniot, Wazirabad, Gujrat, Nankana Sahib, and Narowal, where floodwaters surged into residential zones. In Jhelum, storm-fed streams overflowed, but timely rescue efforts saved children stranded on the roof of a madrassa.
In Lahore’s Chuhng area, water levels receded slightly, though private housing colonies remain waterlogged. Surrounding villages, including Phool Nagar, Sarai Mughal, and nearby localities, are facing their worst flooding yet, with damaged roads cutting off access. At Jassar, flood victims complained of food shortages as supplies ran out.
The Ravi at Balloki and the Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala have reached extremely high flood levels. Floodwaters have affected 1,169 villages along the Chenab, 478 along the Ravi, and 391 along the Sutlej.
After sweeping through Sialkot, Wazirabad, and Chiniot, the Chenab’s raging torrents have entered Jhang, submerging villages, destroying hundreds of acres of crops, and washing away vital road links. Over 135 villages are now encircled by water. In Multan’s Shujaabad tehsil, floodwaters swamped fields, damaging crops in at least 140 villages.
Flows in the Ravi have eased at Jassar and Shahdara, but rose sharply at Balloki Headworks, crossing 211,000 cusecs, forcing authorities to open all spillways. Thousands of acres of farmland and livestock in adjoining villages have been hit hard.
In Narowal, a breach in the MR Link Canal allowed water to surge into nearby settlements, putting around 20 villages at risk. In Nankana Sahib, erosion near Haft Madar caused another breach, raising fears that floodwaters could move towards urban areas.
Hundreds of people trapped by rising waters have been ferried to safety in boats. However, complaints of food shortages and slow relief have surfaced in multiple districts.
Authorities remain on high alert as monsoon rains show no sign of abating, and fresh flood surges continue to threaten downstream regions.
