Islamabad, August 31, 2025: The federal government on Sunday ordered the shutdown of all Utility Stores Corporation (USC) outlets across the country, citing unsustainable losses.

Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had approved a Rs19.5 billion compensation package for the USC’s 11,614 employees. He added that the corporation’s nationwide assets would also be auctioned.

The minister noted that a Rs28 billion package had been set aside for different categories of staff, including Rs13.18 billion for regular employees, Rs3.6 billion for contractual staff, and Rs2 billion for daily wagers.

“USC has been incurring losses of nearly Rs600 million every month. Despite efforts, it was no longer viable to keep the organisation running,” Chaudhry said.
