Islamabad, October 21, 2024-Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, has formally requested Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani to provide the names of four senators for the Parliamentary Committee on Judicial Appointments.
In a letter addressed to Gilani, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq asked for the submission of four names from the Senate under the newly amended Article 175 of the Constitution. The Senate Chairman has subsequently requested parliamentary leaders to submit their nominations. Out of the four senators, two will represent the government and two will be from the opposition.
Once the nominations are received, a 12-member Parliamentary Committee will be formed, which will be responsible for nominating one of the three senior-most judges as the next Chief Justice.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has already submitted three names for the Judicial Appointments Committee. Sources indicate that PPP has forwarded the names of Naveed Qamar, Raja Pervez Ashraf, and Farooq H. Naek. The special committee will announce the nomination for Chief Justice.
Additionally, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has nominated Senator Kamran Murtaza as its representative. JUI-F’s Parliamentary Leader in the Senate, Maulana Ata ur Rehman, has submitted Kamran Murtaza’s name to the Senate Secretariat.
