Islamabad, January 23, 2026: President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Sardar Tahir Mehmood, has stressed that sustainable economic growth in Pakistan is directly linked to the strengthening of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), describing them as the backbone of the national economy.
Speaking to a representative delegation from the industrial sector here on Friday, the ICCI President said that MSMEs play a critical role in employment generation, poverty alleviation, export growth, and innovation. He noted that achieving a sustainable GDP growth rate of 6–7 per cent is only possible through localization and an export-driven industrial base, adding that long-term economic stability and inclusive growth cannot be attained without empowering MSMEs.
Sardar Tahir Mehmood pointed out that MSMEs contribute a significant share of industrial output and provide livelihoods to millions of people across the country, particularly youth and women. He emphasized that targeted policy support, access to affordable financing, technological upgradation, and skills development are essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential.
The ICCI President urged the government to create a more conducive business environment for MSMEs by simplifying tax regimes, reducing the cost of doing business, ensuring affordable energy, and facilitating easier access to credit. He also called for stronger public-private collaboration to help MSMEs integrate into local and global value chains.
Highlighting the role of ICCI, he said the Chamber is actively promoting entrepreneurship, start-ups, and capacity building for small businesses through advocacy, training programs, and stronger linkages between academia and industry. “ICCI remains committed to supporting MSMEs so they can evolve into competitive, resilient, and growth-oriented enterprises,” he added.
Sardar Tahir Mehmood further said that a vibrant MSME sector is vital for driving innovation, boosting exports, and ensuring balanced regional development. He expressed confidence that focused reforms and sustained support for MSMEs would significantly enhance economic resilience and contribute to sustainable development.
