Paris, February 27, 2026: Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atalanta secured places in the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 on Wednesday, while Juventus’s heroic fightback fell just short against Galatasaray in a dramatic night of knockout action.

Real Madrid progressed with a 3-1 aggregate win over SL Benfica after a 2-1 victory in Madrid. Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior scored the decisive goal, breaking free 11 minutes from time to fire past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

Coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised Vinicius for his game-changing performance. The win also provided a response to the racism controversy that had overshadowed the first leg in Lisbon, as Argentine midfielder Gianluca Prestianni sat out the match under a provisional UEFA ban.

Benfica briefly led through Rafa Silva in the 14th minute, but Aurelien Tchouameni equalized just two minutes later, setting up the winning scenario for Madrid.

Paris Saint-Germain advanced after a 2-2 draw at Parc des Princes, winning 5-4 on aggregate against 10-man AS Monaco. Despite a sluggish start and early challenges, PSG struck back after Mamadou Coulibaly received two quick yellow cards. Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored to secure the win, with Jordan Teze netting an injury-time goal.

Coach Luis Enrique praised the team’s resilience and problem-solving abilities throughout the tie.

Italian giants Juventus came agonizingly close to overturning a 5-2 first-leg deficit against Galatasaray. Extra-time goals from Victor Osimhen and Baris Yilmaz gave the Turks a 7-5 aggregate victory, despite Juventus scoring three times in Turin.

Captain Manuel Locatelli’s first-half penalty and Weston McKennie’s late header had forced extra time, but a red card for Lloyd Kelly and decisive extra-time strikes ultimately ended Juventus’s campaign. Club icon Giorgio Chiellini reflected on the team’s effort, emphasizing that the display should serve as motivation for the remainder of the season.

Atalanta maintained Italy’s Champions League representation with a dramatic 4-1 home victory over Borussia Dortmund, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit. Lazar Samardzic scored a stoppage-time penalty after a VAR overturn and two red cards to seal a 4-3 aggregate win.

Atalanta coach Raffaele Palladino described the night as “unforgettable” and a “dream come true,” celebrating a comeback that ensured Serie A continued its streak of having at least one team in the round-of-16 since the 2003-04 season.

Wednesday’s fixtures highlighted the drama and intensity of the Champions League playoffs: Real Madrid and PSG progressed with composed performances, Atalanta achieved a last-minute miracle, and Juventus’s courageous fight ended in heartbreak. Fans now await the draw for the round-of-16, with top clubs set to clash across Europe in the competition’s next stage.
