Kandy, February 26, 2026: Sri Lanka elected to bat first after winning the toss against Pakistan in a crucial Super Eight encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

The high-stakes match is a must-win fixture for Pakistan as the Green Shirts seek a place in the tournament’s semi-finals. Pakistan and Sri Lanka have faced each other 24 times in T20 internationals, with Pakistan holding a clear edge after winning 14 matches.

However, the rivalry remains evenly poised in T20 World Cups. In their four previous meetings in the tournament, both sides have registered two victories each, adding further intrigue to the pressure-filled contest.

Both teams entered the match struggling for momentum, having managed just two wins in their last five T20Is. Neither side had secured a victory in the ongoing Super Eights stage prior to this clash.

Sri Lanka, despite enjoying home conditions, are already out of the semi-final race after losing both of their Super Eight matches and sitting at the bottom of Group 2 with zero points.

Pakistan, meanwhile, are placed third in the group with one point, earned from their washed-out match against New Zealand, keeping their qualification hopes alive.

The 2009 champions face a stiff task, needing to defeat Sri Lanka by approximately 65 runs, or successfully chase the target within 13 overs, to overtake New Zealand on net run rate and advance to the knockout stage.
