Russia condemns US–Israeli strikes on Iran, calls for immediate return to diplomacy

Moscow, February 28, 2026: The Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday strongly condemned the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing the action as a deliberate, premeditated, and unprovoked act of armed aggression in violation of international law.

In an official statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that US and Israeli forces conducted airstrikes on Iranian territory early on February 28. It noted that the scale and nature of the military, political, and propaganda preparations preceding the strikes—including the deployment of substantial US forces to the region—left no doubt that the attack had been carefully planned.

Moscow said the strikes constituted a direct breach of the fundamental principles of international law, stressing that Iran is a sovereign and independent member of the United Nations.

The statement termed it “particularly reprehensible” that the attacks were launched under the cover of a renewed negotiation process that was ostensibly aimed at stabilising the situation around Iran. It added that such actions were carried out despite prior assurances given to Russia that Israel was not interested in entering into a military confrontation with Iran.

Russia urged the international community, including the leadership of the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to urgently provide an objective and unbiased assessment of what it called irresponsible actions undermining peace, stability, and security in the Middle East.

Warning of severe consequences, the Foreign Ministry said Washington and Tel Aviv were pursuing a dangerous course that could push the region toward a humanitarian, economic, and potentially even radiological catastrophe. It asserted that the stated intentions of the attackers—to dismantle Iran’s constitutional order and remove its leadership—made them fully responsible for the consequences of what it described as a man-made crisis and the resulting spiral of escalation.

The statement also expressed concern over the implications for the global non-proliferation regime, whose cornerstone is the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It said the bombing of nuclear facilities operating under IAEA safeguards was unacceptable and bore no relation to the declared goals of non-proliferation.

Moscow cautioned that uncontrolled escalation in the Middle East could prompt countries, particularly in the region, to seek increasingly dangerous means of countering perceived threats. It further criticised what it called the systematic violation by the US administration of key principles of the international legal order, including non-interference in internal affairs, the renunciation of the use or threat of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Concluding the statement, Russia called for an immediate return to the political and diplomatic track, reaffirming its readiness to assist in promoting peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect, and a balanced consideration of interests.
