Lahore, March 2, 2026: The Pakistan Cricket Board is considering penalising national cricketers following the team’s underwhelming campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistani media reported on Monday, citing sources.
The 2009 champions were knocked out of the 20-team tournament last week after failing to secure a sufficiently large-margin victory over Sri Lanka in their final Super Eights fixture.
Pakistan’s five-wicket win against the hosts proved to be their only victory against a Full Member nation. The side suffered defeats to arch-rivals India and England in the group and Super Eight stages, respectively, while their match against New Zealand was washed out due to persistent rain in Colombo.
The exit marked Pakistan’s second consecutive failure to qualify for the semi-finals, with their last appearance at that stage coming in the 2022 edition, where they finished as runners-up.
In the aftermath, the PCB is reportedly examining the possibility of imposing fines of up to Rs5 million on certain players for poor performances during the tournament. Sources said the board is reviewing the legal framework and potential complications before enforcing any financial penalties.
It was also indicated that the fines, if approved, would not be applied uniformly. Players whose performances were deemed “extremely disappointing” could face heavier sanctions, while those who delivered satisfactory outings may be spared.
Following the T20 World Cup disappointment, the Pakistan national cricket team is scheduled to tour Bangladesh for a three-match One Day International series, set to be played in Dhaka from March 11 to 15.
